When Mitchell Crothers auditioned for the South Dakota Middle School All-State Jazz Band last year, there was a lot to take in. But he was confident in his abilities, and he soon passed the test and found himself and his alto saxophone among the dozens of students playing at the Mitchell Performing Arts Center.

The 21st annual Highland Jazz and Blues Festival will be held on Saturday, Sept. 13. This year’s fest will celebrate the music, culture, and community of Shreveport. Musicians and bands interested in performing at the festival must apply by Mar. 21. The festival, held yearly at Columbia Park in Shreveport, features established and emerging artists.
